Yup - the second one.

New quote:
I'm just as surprised as you at the "hey" and the "ain't".Hey, you, evil, stupid, the service is still. Nibble the edges of the old plot to choose to stay. Then, stay! warn, a simple I ain't coming back.

Is it Sam's song about the old troll?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Is it Gandalf talking to Suruman: "You might still have turned away from folly and evil, and have been of service. But you choose to stay and gnaw the ends of your old plots. Stay then! But I warn you, you will not easily come out again."
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Oh yeah, I'm supposed to post a new one.
I thought about going with a translation of the troll's purse saying "'oo are you?" but that just translated to "' Object-oriented are you?" and that didn't seem to be much fun, so I went with this instead:
"So what's next. 3 I heard some strange doings to listen at the door under the sleeping area and the Hobbit! something powerful behind this is wrong ".

Is it from The Hobbit?

Or from The Shadow of the Past?
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it the fox?
'Hobbits!' he thought. 'Well, what next? I have heard of strange doings in this land, but I have seldom heard of a hobbit sleeping out of doors under a tree. Three of them! There's something mighty queer behind this.'

Frelga has it! Very impressive. Did you follow the thought process of something said by an inanimate object to something said by an normally non-sentient being?

Not really, I just remembered the quote.

Going to need a hint... All I can think of is a story in Irika's book about fairies making snowflakes.
