The Tolkien Translation Game!

No - earlier than that.

Oh, to Gandalf?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Er. In case anyone is waiting for me to reply, please don't, for of clues I have none.

I think you've narrowed it down to one of two conversations...

And if I had half an hour to spend with the book, I would undoubtedly have found it.
Alas.
Alas.

'But I begin to wish, somehow, that I had gone too. I wonder if I shall ever see him again.’
ETA: In the earlier of the two conversations that you reference (although actually there was another brief conversation between Frodo and Gandalf even earlier than that), just before Gandalf goes off to discover the truth about the Ring.

I'll come up with a new one when I get a chance.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
A couple of hints. There is a change from plural (in the original) to singular (in the translation). And the adjective is a synonym.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Does "men" refer to the race of men?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
No. And the plural word used in the original quote is not "men".
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
