I just posted an article by David Wong to the 2016 election thread and mentioned that it contained a link to another excellent article by the same author on a different topic. It's good enough I want to put in another plug for it, here on a thread where that topic is relevant. Cracked language warning, of course.

That's a really interesting bookend to the other piece, Dave, thanks for sharing it.

That article is a lot less easy to whole-heartedly digest - the libertarian side of me winces at the "there are no individuals" notion, for one - but it is definitely still some really good food for thought. :)

Accurate, though.

However, that notion also gets close to the notion of "treating people as things*", and the whole "good for the system" debate that is the root of evil*.

One of the roots. Evil is like crabgrass. It's hard to get rid of without hurting everything around it.

That is worth repeating.

This comedy skit somehow seems very relevant to much of this topic.....

I've been sharing that skit with people from You Tube. Tom Hanks is one of the few actors that could pull that off. That he brought his A game to a SNL skit (to several of them this time around) is pretty damn impressive. And the skit itself... is really, really interesting. Funny but not light, with odd moments of poignancy and an admirable adroitness at playing with cliches.

I thought it was quite good, too, when I saw it.
