Interview with Doug Adams on Tall Tale Radio, talking about the process and challenges of creating the scores for the epic TH adventures.

http://www.talltaleradio.com/episode-193-doug-adams/

Main news I picked out of this is that, according to Doug Adams, Jackson has told the NZSO that they will be recording the TABA soundtrack, in NZ.

Since they did a wonderful job with the DOS OST, I am all in for this. :)

Doug Adams book on The Music of The Hobbit now in editing!

http://www.musicoflotr.com/2014/06/fantasy-con.html
For the past few months, I've spent most of my create time outside of Middle-earth. That's about to change. Book two--which I've teased on Twitter and in online interviews, but am not yet ready to fully announce--is now in editing. That means I'm headed back to Tolkien's world.

To kick things off, I'll be appearing at Fantasy Con in Salt Lake City over the Fourth of July weekend. I'm scheduled for two events right now, and we're lining up a book-signing as well. And hey, maybe there will be a surprising announcement or two in store ...

I believe he's actually referencing a book on film music in the silent era that's he's been working on since Hugo. He talks about it more here.

I think he's saying he's mostly done with that, so now he can get back to the Hobbity stuff.

I'm glad you posted that anyway, as I was only vaguely aware of this project, and it sounds extremely interesting.

Elen, I thought the same thing you did, although I also thought that it was extremely strange that the Hobbit book would be in editing before the final soundtrack has even been composed. I'm glad to learn that there is a more rational explanation.

The recording of the BotFA soundtrack has apparently begun:

I like The Hobbit's original music, but not all of it. I don't know. It's either too generic or lacking something. Maybe originality. It relies too much on what was estabilished in LOTR. Lothlórien, Rivendell, Shire. I've lost count of how many reused songs from LOTR there are in TH.

BTW the cover art for the Bo5A soundtrack has been confirmed:

Image

And with DoS suddenly reverting to the LotR trilogy pattern of mixing up the colours on the packaging of BR/DVD EE and the OST SEE, it would be an educated guess to say that the Bo5A SEE might be the grey/green of the DoS EE packaging...

The BotFA soundtrack is now up for pre-order on Amazon.com...

Special Edition release date December 16th

and Regular edition release date December 9th

So the Special Edition won't actually be released until after the movie hits theatres in many parts of the world, presumably due the later US release date. Hopefully we will still get snippets previewed online as before within the next couple of months...

It has been announced on Twitter that Original Song from 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" is titled "The Last Goodbye" and is written by Billy Boyd, Walsh, & Boyens!

https://twitter.com/AwardsCircuit/statu ... 4636507137

Not clear if it will be Billy Boyd actually performing the track, but I for one hope so!

ETA: Yes, it is confirmed by WB that Billy is performing the song, on their "For Your Consideration" page:
