Aldarion and Erendis

I recently reread this and was reminded of how much I like it. It is so different from anything else Tolkien wrote, as Christopher says in the intro, but still feels distinctly Tolkien. It's one of the few up-close character-oriented look we get at the Second Age, too. And Erendis is one of Tolkien's best female characters. She is flawed of course, but in an interesting and generally sympathetic way (while they both share the blame, I would put more on Aldarion than on her).

Also, Erendis's description of Númenórean men, even if tainted by bitterness, proves somewhat accurate in the long run.

Of all the works of JRRT, it's the one I think would make the best screenplay...after all incriminating references were filed off of course. The story has a lot of universal appeal.

I agree with both you, although Ax the challenge would be properly establishing the Numenorian setting.

Because it is so dialogue-driven and doesn't really need fancy visuals, it might make an ever better stage play.

Lidless could take it in hand very successfully. Have you read his most recent screenplays? Excellent! Also, award-winning, literally.
Mornings wouldn't suck so badly if they came later in the day.

There's even a nice alternate title with no unfamiliar words for the mass audience: "The Mariner's Wife."

Thing is, I don't believe it requires a Númenórean setting. The motif of the love triangle between a man, a woman and the sea is broadly applicable to a variety of settings, especially those of burgeoning imperial powers. It could work for the US in the 19th century, Great Britain in the 18th, or China in the 15th.

True. But it's only the Númenórean setting that would make it unique - and perhaps quite memorable. Would be refreshing to see such a down-to-earth fantasy, as an antidote to the more usual heroic or Lilliputian modes.

While I don't disagree with you, for me the story is too connected to the Numenorian setting for me to appreciate it set elsewhere. Plus, you would lose the subtext of Gil-galad's message about Sauron's rise, and the wonderful scene of Meneldur giving up the throne so that Aldarian can answer. And the wonderful image of the Elven gift of the songbirds.

No way, Jose! I've done my stint - my turn to critique someone else's effort!

Anyway, the Quenta Sil was simply a labour of love, done for personal enjoyment and certainly not trying to masquerade as a professional effort in any way, shape or form. No way I am taking any such project on again on my own...it's the sharing of ideas that is the most enjoyable part. If people want to simply have a discussion here about individual ideas and visions for the screenplay, though, that would be fun to be part of... :wooper:

I'm in book 3 of my re-read of LotR, and while the form and style of Aldarion and Erendis is still unique among his work, I'd forgotten the Entwives - their story is similar in some ways. So is Amroth and Nimrodel, actually, which I need to reread in Unfinished Tales soon. Tolkien wrote a lot of troubled and sometimes downright dysfunctional couples, especially for someone with a good (as far as I know) marriage!
