That's awesome!

There's a further article, and more pictures of the various M-e lego builds at BrickWorld 2011 here: Journey of the Fellowship
The concept was born at BrickWorld 2010. Kelso and I were talking and we thought "hey, wouldn't it be fun to do a collaborative?" Sure it would. So after a little thought (and some other concepts that will remain nameless as they may be future projects) I said to him "Hey, I got it... let's do Lord of the Rings." He says to me "You mean like... a few of us build Minas Tirith or Barad Dur?" "No, no, no..." I replied "Let's do Middle Earth... ALL of it."

That's really amazing. Except the first one in the series, of course, but that one was a last minute emergency addition.

Whilst I hesitate to distract from the Lego masterpieces, here is something completely different - and closer to my heart in terms of artistic endeavour:

Tribute to Tolkien, by Sue McCarty

Image

At the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky is a beautiful and massive LotR quilt – the center is Aragorn, Arwen and Gandalf, while there are many symbols included around the rest of the quilt. The nine, seven, three and one rings are there, as well as the initials of the four Hobbits, Gollum, the Two Towers and Sauron, Smaug, the Ringwraith, and other images. It’s absolutely breathtaking.

Here is a clickable image for close up detail.

I'd love to get a closer look! I followed the link, but "MagicZoom" doesn't seem to be working for me, even though it does on the MagicZoom site.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Oh, that's a shame...the link works fine for me on IE9. I mean, obviously it doesn't zoom right in as close as I'd like, but the enlargement thingy does work in the lower image as you click & drag the cursor over the top one!

Uhm, not sure. I was taking the description posted by someone who'd seen it, [on TORn] for granted. Presumably he's in the outer border as the description on Flickr says that the enemies are represented around the edge, with the allies in the blocks.

btw, when viewing the Flickr link, if you click on the image again it does enlarge slightly...

And now for something even more completely different:

That was kind of approaching the outer realm of "different." :D

People from the old original Official New Line Lord of the Rings Fan Club, the first internet group I ever joined, created a scrapbook to raffle off at The Gathering in Toronto, in 2004. We created a second one at the same time to send to Peter Jackson.

A woman whose name was Hobbitlove (can't remember her real life name) put the scrapbooks together. They were incredible. I was amazed at how lovely they were, at the details, the care, the artwork, every page was a little masterpiece.

I didn't win the raffle, although I would have loved to. And I don't know, after all this time, whether Peter Jackson got his scrapbook or not, but if he did, he would have had to be impressed.

Several "inklings" of mine were in it. I was very proud. :)

Not exactly new media, but looks like someone found The Stairs of Cirith Ungol.

I can't imagine climbing that without the chains! Not for long, anyway!

I can't imagine climbing that, period, unless the Nazgûl were after me. :D

Continuing with the theme of Middle-earth in real world, Lothlórien in the jungle, or The Living Bridges of Cherrapunji (more photos at the link)

That is really cool, Frelga. It seems like a very Elvish notion, to use trees without killing them.

Meanwhile, as 9/11 approaches again, people are starting to ask—what really happened on 3/25?

Lord of the Rings bluegrass: “Ballad of Helm’s Deep”

(I put it here rather than create a new thread in the Tolkien movie forum, but this is about the film version, not the book.)

I think it fits here perfectly well, Voronwë; everything in this thread is an adaptation of some kind, and many are strongly influenced by the films or even entirely based on them.
