Cuiviénen
There’s no return to ancient lands
Where by the Bay of Helcar stands
The place of birth, where first on Earth
Awoke the Three at His commands.
There lying ‘neath an ancient star,
Unheard of then was Eldamar,
Not yet roaming, in the gloaming,
The Firstborn of Ilúvatar.
Where now may be Cuiviénen?
Passed far from fair or mortal ken.
Lost back in time, no word or rhyme
Can ever tell where it was then.
For lost it is now to themselves,
To Eru’s Children, Men or Elves,
And no return, though hearts may yearn,
For deep in Arda evil delves.
The world is changed since Melkor wrought
This delving in the Earth, and sought
With force of battle, Orcish chattel,
Elves no more, who with him fought.
With battle won, the Valar came
And called upon the One, whose name,
Ilúvatar, o’er Earth and Star,
Would sway those fooled by Melkor’s shame.
And swayed were more by one so wise,
Who looking out on Varda’s skies,
Recalled a sight, the Two Trees’ Light,
And overcame all Melkor’s lies.
And so the Kindreds to the West
Set out toward the land so blest.
And lost was then, Cuiviénen,
The Elder Race left Eru’s nest.
