Well done Imelda! I think my Irish ancestors would agree.

This kind of blew my mind when I saw it on FB today...yeah, HOW many years since slavery was banned, and integration of schools started less than 60 years ago? No wonder we still have problems!

When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes The Rose.

I'm fond of reminding people that seemingly-distant history isn't all that old. There are people alive today who met emancipated slaves.

MLK and Anne Frank are both the same age as my FIL, who is currently enjoying pie with ice cream on my patio.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

I moved the posts about the incidents in my community to the Parlour in Bag End.

I realize that this is a larger problem than just the US, it does span across many countries. But it feels strange to watch this happening elsewhere, too.

The U.S. has a huge cultural umbrella, and any major event in the U.S. is quickly followed by copycat events elsewhere. E.g. we had a small anti-lockdown protest in Melbourne about a week after the Michigan protest.

BLM solidarity protests in Australia have been reinterpreted for our internal issues - systemic institutional racism and the atrocious record of Aboriginal deaths in custody.

Our Covid-19 statistics are very hopeful but nonetheless the protesters were required to abide by social distancing restrictions, masks and sanitiser. Son went off to the protest with a backpack full of masks - extras in case of unmasked marchers, and he did give some away, but it was basically peaceful and positive.

Yes, I should have mentioned that too - the trends get interpreted for the local environment. In our case, Aboriginal deaths in custody (IOW, the concern is not so much with how Aboriginal people are arrested as the rate that they die in police cells and in prison). I saw a big "Black Lives Matter" chalked on a local train station when I went out for a run this evening.

With COVID-19 I wish they had all stayed home, but things went about as well as could be expected. The crowds and the police were both quiet and orderly.

You have the luxury of being on the other side of the planet. Can't you just ignore the bad ideas?

Impy, I was wondering why Oz was joining us but that puts it in perspective.

Um, guys, Mitt Romney marched for Black Lives Matter in DC today, along with a bunch of evangelical pastors.

Also, protesters are turning the ginormous fence around the WH into a ginormous memorial to victims of police brutality. There is a certain poetry in that. The Trump Admin took active steps to thwart Obama-era reforms meant to address police brutality. Of course, that didn't fix anything and now here we are, with global protests and a barricade around the WH being decorated with the faces and names of the dead.
