I thought there would be a thread for this. It is super exciting that scientists have now for the first time, been able to directly image a black hole. The black hole imaged is the supermassive black hole in the centre of galaxy M87.
I will just post some links here, including 2 of the 6 simultaneous press conferences. To accomplish this feat, it was a multidisciplinary group of 200 scientists, who simulated a telescope the size of the earth, to capture a direct image of something that cannot be directly seen. It's an astonishing break through, and I can't wait to see what future breakthroughs in science can now be possible due to this feat.
Links to be edited in later. (Brain needs a break.)

Re: First image of a black hole
It's been discussed in the "Geek" thread in Bag End, though I agree there should be a thread here.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
