Re: Gun Control Debate
A good friend of ours was at the festival, though she left before the shooting happened.
I've lost the ability to process the mix of emotions that these shootings generate - anger, mixed with profound sadness, despair and utter bemusement that people refuse to take reasonable action to stop, or least slow, these preventable tragedies.

It'll stop when enough people stop bowing before the Gun God and his priests.

Re: Gun Control Debate
The people do want gun control, but we're not living in a democracy anymore.
2 more mass shootings today.

Okay. It'll stop when the right people stop bowing before the Gun God and his priests.

Re: Gun Control Debate
Where, Dave? I see that there were shootings at two houses in a town in Wisconsin yesterday leaving 5 dead including the shooter, but I haven't seen anything today (which might just mean that the news hasn't trickled down to me yet).

Can't even keep with with them anymore. Helpless, hopeless, pointless.

Re: Gun Control Debate
This isn't a debate thread anymore, you know. Maybe a title change is in order?

If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Re: Gun Control Debate
*sigh* I looked up a couple of news articles on the shooting and I was saddened and disgusted to see the comments, virtually all in support of more guns, I hope they are Russian bots and not real people. Ostensibly their view was to 'prevent' this sort of thing with More Guns!. For what it's worth, there were people (off duty military) on site who were (legally) carrying a weapon but they said their were so many kids running around they were more concerned with protecting the children/getting them out of harms way than to start shooting.

The store was full of families doing back to school shopping.
So far, the reports about the murderer are exactly what we've come to expect.

Stolen from a friend:
Cory Booker on MtP says Trump is sowing the seeds of hate in our country. That’s untrue. He’s just watering them. And fertilizing them with his bullshit.

Ian Fleming comes to mind.

Re: Gun Control Debate
I wonder what the goal these home-grown extremists have. "We're losing the argument so we're just going to scare people into submission?" Or is it "OPEN SEASON ON KIDS!! YEEHAW!!!"
I feel like I accomplished something by taking the entire fam to Target for school supplies and not getting shot at. WTaF?
ETA: On a more personal note, one of my cousins is in El Paso, working at Ascension House (Jesuit-run migrant shelter). He was on his way to the WalMart when the shooting happened and got warned off. The facility he works at has stepped up security just in case the next lone wolf fascist decides to shoot the migrants.
Edit again: actually, it's Annunciation House. Sorry.
