Tolkien biopic

Post by yovargas »

How has nobody posted about the fact that someone is planning to make Tolkien biopic?? Not much info yet but still:
The script by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a fellow group of outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels. Karukoski helmed The Home of Dark Butterflies. He is repped by ICM Partners.

Sounds like an awful, awful idea to me but I suppose we'll see!

I posted about it last year, though it either was renamed or a different effort altogether.

Oh yeah, look at that! Though considering all the names are different it seems like a different project, I'd think.

Yeah, it does look like a different project. Which bets the question, is there really a market for two biopics about Tolkien?

I'd be surprised if there's a market for one, really.

So, that guy from Fury Road and Phil Collins' daughter may play JRRT and Edith. But besides the forbidden love story, reconverting CS Lewis and WW1, his life wasn't terribly cinematic... It's basically sitting in rooms talking, drinking and smoking if he's not writing. Or having fever dreams about elves in military hospitals.

Tolkien's real life may not have been all that cinematic, but who knows what his Hollywood life was like.

Colm Meaney Cast In Fox Searchlight’s ‘Tolkien’

He is playing Father Francis. It will be interesting to see how he is portrayed.

I'm curious as to whether they've gotten permission to actually quote the Lost Tales (or later more polished versions might work better) in the movie. Hearing him read the Fall of Gondolin or the Nirnaeth or even Ainulindalë over WWI images could be pretty powerful stuff.

Indeed, whether they can and/or will actually use the material Tolkien wrote around and during WWI could make a real difference to how good the movie is. Not just a depiction of his life, but how much impact it leaves on people as a film.

I doubt it, quite frankly. And so far as I know they have not consulted with John Garth, which would seem to be an obvious thing to do. But we'll see!

Did any of you listen to the BBC Radio Play "Tolkien in Love"? It used parts of the Beren and Lúthien story that weren't in LotR

I have to say, that gave me chills. I always go into these things with low expectations, but now I'm excited.

Yep, I'm impressed. Very curious now as to how the legendarium (and how much of it) will be integrated with the historical/biographical narrative.

I think you would have loved the Beren and Lúthien Radio play V. (ETA: I mean Tolkien in Love)
