I agree, but the phpbb software doesn't let us do that.

Wow, did this one ever get changed:
Old Tuk lives there every year and says his room is old and embarrassing.

Simples. I went here and did a Ctrl-F on "old took":

Like I said. That's cheating. I actually thought it was from Fellowship. So I'm not claiming it! :)

I removed the link, which unless I am missing something appears to be a massive copyright violation.

I'm not sure to be honest. A lot of older books are freely available online under Project Gutenberg, but I'm not sure if that applies to LotR. I do know its absurdly easy to find so the Tolkien Estate has obviously made no attempts to have it removed. A google of "lord of the rings text online" will demonstrate.

How long since JRRT died? Copyright holds for 70 years after author’s death.

All of Tolkien's works are still under copyright protection, other than his introduction to G.B Smith's book of poems that he was instrumental in publishing and a guide to Middle English that he was involved with. Please do not post links to copyright-protected works on this message board.

Without violating copyright, it's possible to search Tolkien's works on Google Books. It only shows a snippet of text around the search phrase rather than entire work, so Google can probably argue fair use.

Although considering that I own two print copies and a Kindle version, I can't see how I'm violating anything with an online search.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Your searching online is fair use; making a full text available online for people to download is not.
