Is it Frodo to Sam, just after they passed the Watchers with the use of the Star-glass?

Here's a new one. And as a hint, I will say that a procedural question that Jude asked some time ago in this thread is relevant to this quote.

Because the sun is dark and there are few faithful people, there is no hope for people.

So, it's from the Akallabêth? Or the "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age"?

Ok; I don't have The Silmarillion with me in India, so someone else will have to take it forward.

This is probably Amandil, speaking to Elendil:

I think it is a sad story, and that may have happened to other people I know as my hobby.

Is it related to the retelling of some old Elvish tale?

Not Sam talking or being addressed.

I suspect that TranslationParty transliterates phonetically when it comes up against a word that it doesn't recognize. That may give you a clue as to where "hobbies" comes from...

It may help to think of all the sad stories that one character told another...

The first part of the translation is extremely accurate.

You would think that TranslationParty would recognize the word, seeing as that there were three major blockbuster films made with it in their titles!

There would have to be a matching word in Japanese, though
