If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Is it from LotR?

Is loophole present in the original?

No, earlier than LOTR.

The word loophole is not in the original; think of a synonym, or a phrase that would mean the same.

The way it's used in the original, "loophole" would not be an appropriate translation.

“Would not be appropriate” or “would not be inappropriate”?

Would not be appropriate, or, would be inappropriate.

In other words, the original has a phrase that in some cases could be substituted with "loophole", but not in the case of the original quote.

In other other words, the translator saw the original phrase and thought "Aha! that means loophole!" and stuck it in without considering the context.

So like button hole or loop of thread or ring on a chain, something more like that?

No, nothing at all like that.

How do you normally use the word "loophole"?

A way to get around a requirement.

But I thought you said that the translation wasn't accurate for the original meaning? So I was trying to think of some creative way of reinterpreting it.

No... that would be an appropriate use of loophole.

So “escape” is there in the original sentence. Reference to escape route or something?

The actual word "escape" is not there, but you're on the right track. An alternate phrase for "escape route"...

Does it have to do with barrels?
