That's brilliant! Wrong, but brilliant!

Getting back on track, the person spoken to is also an Orc.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
OK, for real now. Is this between two orcs in Cirith Ungol? Didn't one of them call another something along the lines of peaching sneak-thief? Or did I make it up?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Found it, in Mordor proper. It's the unnamed tracker orc (whose name could be Rudy for all we know).

Well done (and forever after, the tracker orc will be Rudy to me; after all, even as we speak he is in Budapest meeting with the same discredited, corrupt Ukrainians trying to track down dirt on Biden, etc.)

But this is the same size as elm wood, 7 yards, 1 inch

Sounds like the hobbit describing a possible Ent sighting in Hobbiton. Someone's cousin Hal?

You got the right scene, although Hal is not the speaker.

I think it was Sam talking to Ted Sandyman I think, but I'll have to check my books. It was something like "My cousin Hal swears he saw an Elm on the North Downs(?) and it was walking, seven yards to a stride if it was an inch" "I'll bet it was an inch then" "But there's no elms on the North Downs" "Then your cousin Hal can't have seen one" and something about the crowd seemed to think Sandyman had scored a point.

Just for accuracy here's the actual quote. "But this one was as big as an elm tree, and walking - walking seven yards to a stride, if it was an inch" (And it was on the North moors, not the North Downs )
New quote:
If you believe in an old story, it is not new. And I don't know what is important to me or you.

Is this during one of the conversations between Frodo and Sam in which they speculate as to whether anyone will write about them?
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is the speaker Aragorn?
