Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
A happy quote that is a question? Hmmm!
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it Sam to Gandalf when Sam sees that Gandalf is not dead after all: "Is everything sad going to come untrue?"
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Yes!
I could have just said "happy quote that's a question" from the start and you'd have gotten it.

If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

I don't know about that. Maybe.
New quote:
Leaves a big shadow.
The meaning is almost the opposite of the original.

It's not "shadow is a passing thing", is it?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
This?
Does that count as a quote, since it's not spoken? For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

You had it the first time (as I thought I made clear).

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Hm. Is there another one? Is it still Sam speaking?
Sam said, "But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow," in the movie, but I thought it was a variation on the book quote I gave inserted into the "great tales" speech.
If it's not that then I don't know.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Your first guess was a the correct one. I've said it now three times, but I guess I wasn't clear.
It's your turn for a new quote, Frelga.

"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
But V, looking at Frelga’s comments, it’s not clear. Why don’t you put the right solution here so that Frelga is clear.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I'm not seeing what is not clear. Frelga asked if it was "Shadow is a passing thing" and I said that it was. Then she made a different guess and I said no your first one was right. Then she made another guess and I said again that the first guess was the right one. The correct answer is "Shadow is a passing thing."
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I think the issue is that neither Frelga nor the rest of us are clear where the quote is or who speaks it. It looks like she remembers a fraction of the quote, but needs hints to uncover the whole thing.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Yeah, thank you, Jude.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Sorry, you're right. I thought she had the quote, but the correct quote is actually "A great Shadow has departed" spoken by Gandalf to Sam in response to her quote from Sam.
My apologies. Time for me to step away.

Aw, someone would have gotten it! I had no clue, I was just thinking about the Sam's star.

So does this mean it's Frelga's turn now?
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I didn't get the quote!
Maybe V can post another one?

Okay - next person to read this thread has to post a new quote.
