"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
This one never reached equilibrium, but the last translation was this:
Obviously we are so similar, so your desire to put incurable depression in my hat should be tolerated.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Did it translate Tolkien into Harry Potter?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Because of the hat? That's in the original.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it from The Hobbit?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
No, later.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
There were no hobbits present when it was spoken, but there were at least four other races within earshot. Possibly more.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Oh, of course! It really didn't change very much at all, did it?
Gandalf to Gimli (and Aragorn and Legolas), speaking about his new likeness to Saruman: "Evidently we look so much alike that your desire to make an incurable dent in my hat must be excused."
So the four races are human, Elf, Dwarf and Maia/Istari, and the other possible races are Ent and perhaps Huorn?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
You're correct both in the quote and in my guesses of what possible other races might be nearby.
Your turn!

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Thanks for getting this game back on track!
Here's a new one (note that the part of the sentence that indicates that someone was speaking, similar to a 'he said" though that is not the exact words, was removed from this, and then the translation removed the internal punctuation):
Please receive your reward to keep my children and my wife fair.

I know this one!
Anybody else want to pounce in before me?

I think I know who this is, but I don't have the time to dig for the quote, so I'll pass.

I’m lost. and away from the Sil.

Being away from the Sil is being lost
Okay, here's my guess: Húrin to Thingol:

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Yup (both to your answer, and your observation).
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I'm hoping this is an easy one:
Two weeks! A lot of things may happen in the meantime.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Was I wrong about this being easy? Need a hint?

Is another hint needed?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I'm sitting this one out since I've answer the last two that I didn't ask.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Okay. Frelga? Inanna? Anybody?
