That was a month ago, but it is spoiled now.
So care to give me spoiled thoughts on my spoiled hypothesis?
I'll spoil far enough to say that Meril disagrees with me on this.

If you look for sneering condensation, I'll guarantee you'll find it.

I'm staying out of this thread until I get caught up, and I think I'm the only one on the board who watches the show who is not caught up. So please, everyone, discuss whatever you like, and I'll return when I've seen the last two shows.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Well I've been a fan ever since 1968.
Alas David Tennant has announced that after the Xmas special and the four specials thereafter, he will be leaving.

Sad news.
One of the charms of Doctor Who is that regeneration gives us a new Doctor from time to time (so to speak). But Tennant was terrific.
I really liked Ecclestone and was sure Tennant wouldn't fill his shoes. I was wrong; he surpassed him. So perhaps we'll luck out with the next Doctor as well.
There's a rumor going about that it might be the first black Doctor. That would be interesting.

Hmmmm. Have you seen him act, Tosh?
I just hope he's not bland. Toward the end of the old run they went in for bland Doctors, and I lost interest. The Doctor should be edgy, with a streak of danger (and perhaps a bit mad).

I don't have any clear impression of his acting. They showed clips of him in Ruby in the Smoke, a Philip Pullman Victorian detective yarn with the redoubtable Billy Piper. I saw the story but he made no great impact on me. But then, Billy Piper does attract the eye.
He was also in a political drama; a sort of West Wing lite, but I never watched that. His interview on the programme revealing him showed an unusual face and he gets respect for his acting skills.
The aficianados will fillet and pick over this selection adequately.

We used to watch Dr. Who but don't any more. It's on at odd times and I just gave up. I liked it, though.
I hope the new guy is good. I liked Peter Davis? You know, he was Tristam in All Creatures Great and Small. And he was Dangerous Davies, a series I liked a lot. Hm. Was that the name, though? I think so.

I think it was Davison, wasn't it? Can't remember either.
He was fine as the Doctor, but for my money he also marked the beginning of the blandification process. Not the actor's fault; they just seemed to be backing away from some of the darker horror/science fiction episodes. (Even though I believe the first companion to die on the show was this Doctor's.)
You must understand, though, that the first Doctor I saw was Tom Baker, and he more or less defined the role for me, as for many Americans—the show first made it over here during his run. I thought Baker was over-the-top silly at times, but he could also be nicely creepy and menacing; and he certainly had a wildly original countenance.
I didn't see any Jon Pertwee episodes until later, even though he preceded Baker; but he was also an excellent Doctor. Maybe I have a weakness for beaky Doctors with wild hair (and eyes).

We don't know who he is either. I quite like him but man, Tennant is going to be a hard act to follow!WampusCat wrote:This new Doctor is a Who? to me. He's a brave fellow to follow Tennant, and I hope he does as well.
Prim, I was about ten when I was allowed to watch Doctor Who and that was when Jon Pertwee was the Doc. I really liked him and it took me some time to get used to Tom Baker. But during my teen years, the Baker/Sladen era (the Golden Age!) was totally my era.Primula Baggins wrote:I didn't see any Jon Pertwee episodes until later, even though he preceded Baker; but he was also an excellent Doctor. Forget Rose (I like Rose but the constant fangirling of the character gets on my nerves), Sarah-Jane was the best companion EVAH, so there.
I liked Martha and Donna too.
Some of my Live Journal friends are wailing and moaning and complaining about Eleven. Pphhhhffttt. They'll get over it.
Tennant was always going to be a hard act to follow, cuz he is just and and
I'm not bothered about Eleven being such a young Doc. From what I can make out, he has the quirky qualities needed for the role and, I hope, the darkness.
But man, I'm gonna miss the lovely David!
Marry me, Ten. I'll have your babies.

Worth pointing out that this isn't necessarily the end for the Tenth Doctor!
Spoilers for anyone not up to date with S4:
The mortal version of the 10th doctor is with Rose on the parallel Earth, living a mortal life. How cruel and painful would it be to rip them apart again, maybe even give Tenant a death scene? Its gotta be on the cards...
Spoiler end....

There is magic in long-distance friendships. They let you relate to other human beings in a way that goes beyond being physically together and is often more profound.
