Slow motion videos

Post by Maria »

My husband and I got caught up in watching youtube videos of "The Slow Mo Guys" last night. They are fascinating. These guys find some amazing things to capture in super slow motion. This one of pouring water on an oil fire produces some of the most beautiful flame images I've ever seen.

Seen small it is interesting. When I got it to play on our larger TV at home it was just mesmerizing. And then we got caught up in watching a lot of other videos by these guys ....I think I was sitting there with a grin on my face for a full hour. AMAZING. I mean, the clips were only a few minute long each, but we couldn't seem to stop watching them until well after my normal bedtime.

There are more. We'll be watching them soon, I think. And btw.... I don't see how it is POSSIBLE to get frame rates of 170,000 fps! Most of them aren't that slow, of course, but at least one we watched claimed to be that speed.

They are both cute in a "we're having so much fun doing this" sort of way. :)

Not quite as magnificent as some, but still interesting. :)

Oh, nifty! I can watch Mythbusters on hulu now! We haven't seen that in ages. Which season finale are you talking about? The latest season on hulu seems unfinished.

It's the series finale, Maria, and it aired this week.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

I imagine Hulu will have the balance of the last season pretty soon. I also understand the entire series is syndicated on the Science Channel now, which is fine with me, since the Discovery Channel is nigh-unwatchable for me.

We only get a couple of broadcast channels and cable isn't available - so we are limited to online stuff for now. Which is better than watching mostly DVD as we had before but is still rather limited. I wonder if Mythbusters was ever on DVD? I kind of hate to use our limited bandwidth on non-fiction.

*checks*

There are DVDs... but that really isn't the kind of show you watch over and over again. No need to clutter the place with MORE dvds.

A company laid fiber optic past our place a couple of years ago, but has never activated it as far as I can tell. Rumor has it that once the whole county is supplied with fiber optic, they'll start offering it but not until then.

*sigh*

The downside of rural life.

This is somewhat related, but I found it interesting:

(How the MythBusters guys worked together even though they didn't like each other.)

There are some good insights into social interactions, and I admire them even more for being professionals and having the integrity to see it through.

Good article. It's obvious they have very different temperaments, and that difference comes across in some of the middle seasons in particular...but the respect they have for each other's work and commitment carries them through.

We now return you from Osgiliath.

Impressive!
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

After we saw the "One Moment" video last weekend, we looked for other videos of theirs and liked them. :) They aren't slow motion, though, so I won't link them here. The one with umbrellas acting as pixels was particularly amazing. :)
