Huh. Can't say I've ever seen "genius" as a defining trait of the Joker. Was Jack Nicholson's Joker a genius? My favorite Joker is the version from the beloved Batman The Animated Series (fantastically played by Mark Hamill) and while he was clever and wily, I can't say I ever thought of him as a genius. In my mind he was never dangerous because he's the smartest guy around but because he's so chaotic and unpredictable.

In case you think I’m just a grumpy old man who can’t stand change, I really didn’t think Heath Ledger would be a credible Joker and he completely won me over. He had cunning and guile behind the madness. Nicholson’s Joker was really only a step up from Cesar Romero. As you say, the Animated Joker player by Hamill is the definitive version, but he also shows guile and cunning that I can’t see in Joaquins version.

One of my few criticisms of Nolan’s Joker was that he was too clever, in that pulling of some of his schemes would needed omniscience straining credibility (I’m hard to satisfy, I know :p). I’m not familiar with any of the others, save Burton/Nicholson’s.

So, Terminator Dark Fate was fun. I know the critics hated it, and it may not be a classic but it felt like a return to form and a fitting finale to the Sarah Connors trilogy. A bit predictable in places, but it had the right amount of heart without being schmaltzy, and some nice humorous touches. And the mix of new and old worked well. Solid 7/10. Does what it says on the tin.

Joker has surpassed $1 billion, the first R-rated film to do so, and is now the most profitable comic book movie of all time (thanks to its modest budget). I wonder if this will influence the genre, or if it's a basically a one-off with novelty value and DC and Marvel will continue to make the same movies they've been making so far?

I've found it interesting how the movie has appealed to different people in different ways. I recently spoke with a Chilean socialist who said she found it had a powerful anti-capitalist and pro-civil-disobedience message, which resonated with her as Chile has been through months of serious protests driven by political and economic inequality. It didn't strike me this way, but I understood how someone else could see it differently.

Y'all. Y'ALL! i just got backed from Knives Out, a new whodunit style movie starring Daniel Craig and a bunch of other wonderful people, and I gotta say it's the most fun I've had at the movie all year* and possibly last year too. It's a total crowd pleaser, just fun and delightful from start to finish. I can hardly think of anyone I wouldn't recommend it to so go see it if you have the chance!



*excluding Avengers since that's kind of its own special thing in my mind.

Update - I saw it. It was a lot of fun. Clever plot, brilliant cast, and brilliant casting choices.

Evans tweeted about that scene where the dogs are jumping on him.

Those dogs were amazing and so sweet! I had their toys hidden in my pockets. Nothing was more satisfying than handing them over once they yelled ‘cut’

Put on "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" last night before bed expecting the standard mediocre Netflix fare, and wow; what a weird, silly, smart, twisted, beautiful movie that was, with good music throughout to boot.

My low expectations were at least partly due to confusing the Cohen brothers with the Farrelly brothers...

The Two Popes. Great little film, particularly the acting and cinematography. I understand the story is pretty much entirely fiction, but I enjoyed it from start to finish.

Aeronauts, which was my husband's choice over Star Wars. His argument was that I picked every other movie we've seen since our son moved out. My argument was that he likes Marvel and Knives Out was good.

Aeronauts was not bad. It wasn't boring, but I felt they tried too hard to build excitement from death defying adventures on the balloon flight instead of going into the story of the two main characters, which was IMO more interesting.

Bohemian Rhapsody; R and I were completely blown by it.
I don't know why we have not been as much into Queen as our other rocks bands.

I have tickets w/ friends to go to Bombshell tomorrow, but I think I'm going to flake.

The Lobster.

This is not a movie I would recommend to anyone. This wasn't "so bad it's awesome" it was more like... so very utterly bad I just had to know what happened in the end and was, ultimately, disappointed. It was a bizarre story, told in bizarre scenes, and ended in an unresolved decision... and I would never, ever have watched it willingly, except sweeties kid came over and wanted us to see it so... see it we did.

The apple did not fall far from that tree, I gotta admit.

The Irishman. I boldly predict that yovargas will not like this movie .

It’s exceptionally well-done, but even though I don’t necessarily mind the whole ‘manly men on their manly quest for power’ gangster thing I found it hard to get into. But if you do like the genre you’ll probably like it a lot.

It’s notable for its use of CGI to de-age its stars. It works very well as far as faces go, and I can see it cropping up more often. It can’t make them move like young men, though, which is a limitation. Robert De Niro is very sprightly for a man in his seventies, but he really doesn’t pass for someone forty years younger in the physical scenes. I suspect the technology might have more success in reverse, but then you need to guess what the older version of the actor will look like – here they matched De Niro, Pesci and Pacino to their 1970s and 1980s selves.

I'll be happy to not see it with you. Without having seen it, the trailer and all the buzz just make it sound like same old plot, with same old actors.

Why did they do digital deaging, anyway? Michael Fassbender did a perfectly good job playing young McKellen, for example, while also giving fans something nice to look at.
