Thanks, Sir D. Not particularly to my taste, but I'm sure that it will be well done.

My sense is (at least from the trailers) the story could become overwhelmed by the technique for some viewers. However, thinking back upon the first Star Wars, yeah, it was all about the technique if you wanted it to be, but the story came through all the same.

What I've gathered of the story is the monsters have humankind on the ropes, pretty much accepting the social and economic realities of not being the top of the food chain anymore... that is until an uprising is made.

Obviously I'm really looking forward to it... but then I always saw early Godzilla movies as socialist in nature, in spite of their incredible form ;)

Yes, the voice is a cameo of sorts and originally was straight up GladOS. However they changed the voice's modulation or timbre in the most recent cut because G felt the voice in the natural might be too jarring for people who recognize it.

ETA: here's a link to an article about GladOS in Pacific Rim: http://ca.ign.com/articles/2013/01/07/d ... acific-rim

Interesting side note: when I saw The Lord of the Rings theatre production in Toronto (before it moved to London) they used a sound effect lifted from the PC game Baldur's Gate (not sure if they credited the game sound designers). Anyway I found it to be jarring, brief as it was.

You know how lots of people were claiming that everything over the top and excessive in The Hobbit was PJ and all the subtle stuff was GdT. Hmmmm. Guess not! Makes you wonder where the Stone Giants came from doesn't it?

Did people claim that? If the did they hadn't seen Hellboy 2! And now that you mention it, something about the Stone Giants scene does have a bit of a GdT kinda vide to it.

Well, perhaps the look of them -- though I rather think he favoured something along the lines of Goya's "El coloso." Turning the scene into something that would make a wonderful theme park ride was all Jackson I'd wager. :P

Pacific Rim opens wide this Friday, July 12, and midnight (or 10 pm) Thursday at select theaters. Woot!

I see that it has gotten decent critical response (71% at RT), but very disappointing box office for such an expensive movie, finishing third with a total first weekend domestic take of $37.3 (finishing behind, the critically more acclaimed Despicable Me 2, but also the panned Grown Ups 2, which has an RT rating of 7%).

Reportedly, it is doing well in Asia and Russia (and Mexico, not surprisingly), but not so well in the rest of the international market.

Not my cup of tea, so I won't be seeing it.

The reviews, whether good or bad, are pretty consistent in saying that the action/fight stuff is gorgeous and fun and everything else is mostly meh. Might check it out but probably just wait for bluray....

I'm going to see this today. Mostly because it's hot as !^@&#@ right now, I have no air-conditioning and the movie theater does. And it looks like it might be the most fun out of the choices.

Let me know what you think. I'm with yovi--I'll probably just wait till it's out on Netflix or DVD. But it definitely looked pretty decent. (I'd go see it at the theatre if someone asked me, for example.)

I am unlikely to ever watch this, but I love the geekiness it inspires. As in this reassuring article:

So - Pacific Rim was a perfect movie for a hot summer's afternoon. More than 2 hours of air-conditioned goodness. Completely mindless. And it had everything!

Lots of explosions, some high-tech geekiness, mysterious and brilliant Asian woman, bereaved drop-out who makes good, brave men with inner weaknesses, father-figure who makes the ultimate sacrifice, a sort-of romance and some father-son bonding. Oh, and a really CUTE doggie.

Plus - rock-em-sock-em robots and giant reptiles. Kind of like Transformers go to Jurassic Park with James Bond and Sheldon Cooper.
