Very cool.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

I know this choral arrangement of Africa has been done many times before, but in Irish? For those who don't know, the Irish language is very much in decline and is seriously uncool for students, regularly ranking as their least favourite subject. For years, students would trek to Gaeltacht areas for "Irish College" the year before major examinations, where they would spend a couple of weeks in an Irish based Summer camp. It was considered pretty "twee" until Coláiste Lurgan in Galway started using the two week courses to produce professional quality Irish language translations of popular songs. They are now oversubscribed for all their courses!

ETA: Lyrics for those interested!
Liricí:

Ceol na dtonn a’ bulaladh trom anocht
Ní chloiseann sí ach cogarnáil ‘s sioscadh cainte scaoilte
Eitilt isteach ar leath uair théis a hocht
Geallach gheal a’ lonrú síos, á treoradh chuig ceann scríbe
D’iarr comhairle ar sheanfhear siúil na slí
Mé ‘g iarra’ briathra cabhrach cneasta aniar ón am a bhí
‘Sé dúirt sé liom le súile glé –
Breathnaigh a Mhac- sé ansin os comhair d’aghaidh

Is fada liom an lá go mbeidh tú a’am go deo
Níl tada a bhféadfá rá a choinneos uaim mo ghá níos mó
Bogha ceatha sa spéir fud na hAifrice
Goile uait anois a’ déana’ rudaí nach raibh a’ainn

Cú allta a’ glaoch go mall san oí’
Iad uaigneach brónach fada leo roinnt sóláis ‘s ardú meanamna
Tá ‘s a’am go gcaithfear cloí lem’ chroí,
Mar ‘ bheadh Kilimanjaro ‘g éirí nós Olympus tharis an Serengeti
Ag iarra’ lochtanna a leigheas,
Faitíos orm romham fhéin a’ ghoil ar aghaidh

Is fada liom an lá go mbeidh tú a’am go deo
Níl tada a bhféadfá rá a choinneos uaim mo ghá níos mó
Bogha ceatha sa spéir fud na hAifrice
Goile uait anois a’ déana’ rudaí nach raibh a’ainn

Bogha ceatha sa spéir fud na hAifrice
Goile uait anois a’ déana’ rudaí nach raibh a’ainn
Here's their version of Hello

A very powerful speech from Michelle Obama. It's worth setting aside 25 minutes to watch it in full:

Thanks, Jude! I haven't seen the whole thing yet.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Alatar, I just saw these, and they made Friday afternoon of a very grueling work week feel like a different planet. I love love love the energy and talent of those kids. May they all go out into the world and bring joy (and find it).

Dayum. Was Michelle always such a good orator? She's been killing it lately.

I think that her secret weapon is that she's thought it through, she knows what she means, and she means what she says.

Fantastic use of Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt' in this trailer!

Now, can someone PLEASE explain to me how Charles Xavier can be in this film, if it's set in the future?? He's supposed to be dead!

When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes The Rose.

It's Marvel! :)

Seriously, the number of alternate timelines, time travel events, changed histories in Marvel is notorious.

I did like the music in the trailer. I didn't know it was Johnny Cash, as I'm not a big fan. (Guess I should rethink that.)

His last big hit. It nearly won the award for video of the year. Get the tissues out...saddest thing he ever did!

June Carter died not long after the video was done. When I saw her in it, I thought they'd somehow used CGI to make her part of it. Made me tear up big time. :bawl:

Great song but very sad! :(

Yeah, I'm just not a fan* of country music, so I've never gotten into Johnny Cash. I suppose he sort of transcends that genre, though.

*I don't discuss those brief years in my 20s. I blame Freddy.

Yes, Johnny did indeed transcend the genre. Especially in this particular song, which was written by a rock singer, Nine Inch Nail's Trent Reznor.

I've been on a bit of a Cash binge, looking to see what's been published since his death in 2003. His estate is publishing a book of his poems in November!

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01COJUE4G/ref ... TF8&btkr=1

Many of his songs show how a traditional folk tune, or a song written by someone else can be reworked or given an entirely different meaning or feel. His hit song, "Going to Mephis" is actually a reworking of a folk song (chain gang song) collected by folklorist Alan Lomax, and Slow Rider (also on Johnny's 'Ride This Train' album) is Johnny's reworking of a traditional cowboy song, "I Ride an Old Paint".

That same album, which I plan to buy, also includes a recitation of a poem, "The Harp Weaver" by Edna St. Vincet Millay. I remember the below video clip from the Johnny Cash Show. It was SO typical of Johnny, reminding people around Christmas time of the dark side of life, and those who are less fortunate. Some of the stuff I treasure the most from Cash are things like this, not his greatest hits.
