Also in reverse! The character Crisjen Avarasala and her secretary appear in Season 1, but not until Book 2...

Yes. It was a smart move to do that, in my opinion—it makes the first season of show more interesting and relatable to us Earthers. :P And Crisjen Avasarala is a great character! Though her salty language can be considerably saltier in the book—and she is short and round and white-haired, which wouldn't do for television, nono. (Though I do enjoy Shohreh Aghdashloo's performance in the role.)
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Is it possible to give e-books as a gift? Do I download it and burn it onto a CD or usb stick?

If it makes a difference, the book I'm thinking about is on the Kobo platform.

December 6th. (Was June, was August, was November, now December—but who's counting? :x ) But I'd guess it's more influenced by the new season of the TV show.

I think the book really will appear December 6th; the authors finished the proofs last month and are working on Book 7.

Is there any indication of how many books they envision? Do they have an end in sight or will the keep writing as long as people keep reading?

The blog of theirs I read at http://www.danielabraham.com has been focusing on the production of the TV series. They mention finishing the Book 6 galleys and planning Book 7. (If they're only just planning it now, it seems unlikely to be out next year.)

The story could go on for a long time. They've created a very expansive future that covers an ever-growing amount of space, and they have many characters worth following, though the main characters from Book 1 are central throughout the series.

Well, you certainly could save a lot more money than on the CoH.
