Re: yov's 100 All-time Favorite Songs

I was thinking of adding mine but my generation and my location are quite different than most of y'all :P Would have plenty of choices alien to people here.

And same problem as Alatar. :P Maybe only around 15 bands complete my top 100 (which itself is an ever changing entity)

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

Funny Oscars. Loved seeing Olivia Colman win, and disappointed at Green Book's.

Having recently watched it, Shoplifters should have been the winner in the best foreign film section. Even better than Roma, and it's so full of heart and warmth and sadness.

Re: Lord of the Rings series!?

I don't know about Shore scoring for the TV series. I think I'd like to hear a fresh take on Middle-earth, music-wise.
And after the repetitiveness of The Hobbit scores I'm not very confident about him, per se.

I'm binging through Veep season after season. That show is crazy fun. (It's by the same writer as The 'Death of Stalin')

Re: Tolkien biopic

I really like the trailer (lots of fan-service aside - like the Balrog's face in that sword clash), and I like Hoult as an actor. Here's hoping!

Btw, I'm having trouble logging in from my phone. Every time I log in, it keeps logging me out. Works fine on a PC though. Any idea how to fix this?

I would say it's as far away from a 'remake' as it can get. It's really quite, ahem, amazing.

Here's a list of the extra scenes as far as I remember. This is a wonderful thread. :) Currently, Johnny Cash's "Hurt" gives me the feels. I relate to it on a very personal level. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1Pwfnh5pc 'Bratja' from the anime "Fullmetal Alchemist" is another heartbreaking song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpM...

Re: MCU and You (the Keep Frelga off Tumblr thread)

I expect to like it Frelga. Now, just have to make the time for it. :)

Yov, I forgot about the Raimi films! :P I've updated the list. I don't think the first Spiderman film has aged very well though.

Re: Have you read...can you recommend...

Ten thousand splendid suns and The Kite Runner . I cannot remember the last time my heart was so devastated while reading a book. Khaled Hosseini has a way with words that simultaneously finds the epic and the intimate. And despite the bleak settings of the books, what stood out more than anything ...

And I recently read the chapter from Unfinished Tales that deals with Tuor's arrival in Gondolin. I don't know why, but it's not releasing here till the end of this month. :(

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

I'm looking forward to watching Blackkklansman, Annihilation and First Man. Haven't really seen many movies from this year. I enjoyed Isle of Dogs, and A Quiet Place was quite fantastic (as long as you don't think about the plot too much). EDIT: The Death of Stalin is my favorite film of the year so...

Re: MCU and You (the Keep Frelga off Tumblr thread)

So I caught up with Infinity War and to my surprise, I liked it quite a lot. Plotholes notwithstanding. Narratively it's kind of a mess, but the movie works mainly because of an antagonist as poignant as Thanos, great visuals and color palette, and that ending. (A part of me really wishes that all t...

This gave me goosebumps.

Andy Serkis' directorial debut, and it also has Cumberbatch and Cate Blanchett!
I'm glad it seems to be going along the tone of the book. :)

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

I do like Arrenofsky's movies. They're certainly different, daring, often engaging and very well crafted. But for me, mother! felt too self-indulgent and in-your-face. I do understand why people would actually enjoy it though! And I watched Ladybird. The initial two-thirds of the film was amazing. F...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

I was in the minority in finding Moonlight and Arrival just okay. Silence is in my (very long) "to do" movie list. The only 2016 movie I would have put in the very-good-to-great was foreign film The Handmaiden. (And Civil War on the more "pop" side of things.) Whereas in 2017, a...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

I loved Arrival, Moonlight and Silence. None of these were perfect films per se, but they were so fresh, original and daring. Manchester by the Sea was very powerful as well. I was really glad that a low budget indie film like Moonlight won that night. In contrast, though this year's nominees have a ...
