I have resolved to stay away because I don't know how to be honest here without also being offensive. That never stopped me. :P Good to see you Ethel. Jn, thank you for "evolving" the rules. Hal, I see your point of not wanting to have to be defensive, but sitting aroud with a group...

If you are interested in somewhat tedious books about commerce and the New World, try "How the Scots Invented the Modern World". It seems, in short, that they were drug lords. They got fabulously rich while getting Europe hooked on tobacco from the New World, then used that money to furthe...

Oddly enough, I just picked up this book last week. It's next on my list of books to read while avoiding reading my textbooks. I really enjoyed Snowcrash - it was a wild ride. I look forward to reading this book and will let you know when I'm done with it.

Here are a few articles on current Catholic thought, if you are interested: Baptism's Biblical Roots The Sacrament of Baptism:Celebrating the Embrace of God Part of the beauty of Baptism is its assurance that through this sacrament we share in Christ's victory over the power of darkness in the world...

Most of us know what love is all about. Show love always, and you won't stray far from the mark. While I agree with you that Love is one of the main points of Christ's teachings, and that early on it was said "you will know Christians by their love", what does this say for the people who ...

Alert about the rest of this post - it's about other eerie things that happened around the time of my brother's death. I thought Maria and narya might find it interesting, but I suspect a lot of others might not - hence the alert. It's long, too, because there was a LOT of strange stuff. The whole ...

The first thirty pages were interesting. It is a very quick read, and I'd finish it tonight, but it is late. Maybe tomorrow.

I used to work at an eagle rehab center, mucking out kennels that the recovering eagles were housed in. One time, I remember being surrounded by a cloud of eagle down. To Tlingits, eagle down is a visible blessing, and is sprinkled on groups at a gathering the way holy water is sprinkled on Catholic...

Several thoughts from a retired Catholic. This is what I was taught, but no longer what I feel a conviction about. (More on that in the Heathen thread.) Catholics who die in the state of sin, or as Cerin says - attached to sin, go to Purgatory, where they are cleansed of that sin (through their own ...

Delurking at last. Too many interesting things to comment on for me to bite my tongue and lurk any longer. I shall now commence to post very infrequently. You were warned. :D

 Ethel, it helps to find meaning in this crazy world. Thanks for starting this thread and drawing me out of lurkdom. It may have more levity than some of the other threads in TE, but the jokes seem to be meant in the spirit of comradery. I was born and raised Catholic, and very strongly into my...
