Re: 2022 U.S. Congressional (and Other) Elections

I'm still trying to process the outcome of this midterm. It's almost as if the "red wave" couldn't get past the East Coast and even then the results were really spotty. It was more like a high tide that left some pools in spots. So...what happened? Polls over-estimating in the other direc...

Could we expect Boebert to get primaried in 2024? The GOP shouldn't be under threat in the seat.

Re: 2022 U.S. Congressional (and Other) Elections

Why are NV and AZ taking so long again? Didn't they learn anything from 2020? Can't they copy whatever FL does or hire the people who count cards in Vegas to count votes or something?

Re: 2022 U.S. Congressional (and Other) Elections

Warnock beating Walker was my wish for today, so, could be better, could be worse. Not a bad result for an incumbent party in the mid-terms. It's a bit of a reverse of 2020 where it was the Democrats failing to live up to expectations in Congress - having President Trump on the ballot seems to do od...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

This is probably more of a post for the 'Trump's America' than 'Biden's America' thread, but given that this is the current one, I'll put it here. John Daniel Davidson published an article in The Federalist arguing that the conservative movement has failed , and conservatives need to abandon the ide...

Re: Not enough Whisky for this Tango Foxtrot

But have you considered that Putin is a man's man who will never bow to wokeness, even when his army is humiliated in a proxy war with woke countries? :P It looks like a Russian Imperial Eagle. My first thought was that it looks like a stylized version of the HRE banner , but considering the Russia...

Very low to be honest - the Conservatives have 356 of 650 seats in the Commons.

Re: World News Thread

A week after Liz Truss sacked Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng, Home Secretary Suella Braverman has been forced to resign after she sent an official document via her personal email . The tabloid Daily Star has set up a livecam seeing if Truss will outlast a lettuce . If Truss does somehow ...

Re: Discussion about the Discussion about RoP

I don't have strong views on colour-blind casting one way or the other. It does seem to me to be a bit of a band-aid solution to a deeper problem - the stories which are known in popular culture and attract the most attention tend to come from European or American history, mythology or fantasy, and ...

Re: World News Thread

The good news is that Italy elected its first female prime minister, Giorgia Meloni. The bad news is Giorgia Meloni appears set to become Italy’s most far-right prime minister since Mussolini Apparently she's been smashing glass ceilings in the hard right. From Politico Europe : "In 1992, a 15...

Re: The Passing of Queen Elizabeth II

Stephen Fry made the interesting observation that some of the world's freest and most egalitarian countries have a monarch and an established church in violation of all the principles of the Enlightenment - the principles on which the U.S. was founded. I was reminded forcefully of this watching the ...

Re: The Passing of Queen Elizabeth II

The monarchy is a complex and fascinating institution, particularly now, as it tries to find a way forward in a world which no longer accepts the assumptions it was built on. If you listen to George V’s and Queen Mary’s 1923 Empire Day message to the boys and girls of the British Empire, you can hea...

I'm still undecided on watching this to be honest. Some of the things I've seen in reviews have piqued my interest, but there's been plenty to dampen it too.

Complaining about editorial standards in News Limited tabloids in either Australia or the U.K. is a mug's game, but I just want to note that in the year of our Lord 2022 the Sydney Herald Sun published a column in which the author complaints about having to see "coloured people" on TV. Her...
