In movies made in the 1930s, rich Americans all seem to be trying for a British accent. Maybe it was a finishing-school thing?

I’ve seen both seasons of The Crown and quite enjoyed most of both. Seeing history and social change through a rather weird lens. Lots of good acting and crazy interior design, too.

I know living with snow is tiresome, but it’s still pretty, and I still feel a happy echo of “No school tomorrow!” when I look out at falling snow.

Re: AOC and the GND
One thought - maybe if the rich countries like ours invest heavily on new "green" technologies, competitively priced non-oil options will develop enough to make developing nations start to choose them over oil for simple market reasons? A big maybe but....maybe. That's one of the "mi...

Even that wouldn't be protection against dementia, as it can set in earlier than that. I think a cognitive assessment administered by a respected medical facility should be required, or at least that candidates should be expected to volunteer to undergo one. (At that age they should be seeing their ...

I would like to argue that those around you would know and would never permit you to be run for office, but we have too much evidence that this isn't the case.

But a man who’s already 79 usually has a life expectancy of years more. “Most men don’t live past 80” includes a large cohort of males who died in infancy or childhood.

Re: The Expanse
The books are huge, and there’s just not room for everything. They’ve made choices different than I would have made, too; but others I think have been excellent (see the end of Season 3).

Re: AOC and the GND
I agree with Voronwë, but especially with the idea that this is an aggressively placed starting point, which no one expects to be the final product (many of its goals being, as Faramond points out, impossible). To me it’s heartening to see the discussion open with a proposal that is not a timid gest...

The Expanse
I was put off at first by how pretty they made Holden, but after three seasons I think it fits; his character flaw, after all, is being a little whiny sometimes at how unfair everything is, and it fits that he’d be a pretty boy (and the only child of EIGHT genetic parents, which means his good looks...

Re: 2020 Presidential Election
Some states have pretty close to a non-functional electoral system right now. But what I think Voronwë was talking about, and what I too am really concerned about, is a general loss of faith that elections actually represent the will of voters ("the legitimacy of elections"). The 2016 pres...

Re: Escaping the Echo Chamber
Looking back over this thread, I can see more than one place where I've fallen into the trap of reading into other people's posts what I expect to see there. Maybe we all have to some extent. It's easy when feelings run high, even among friends. I plan to take a breath and stand back for a bit. I kn...

Númenórean. The accents appear automatically (magic courtesy of Voronwë). You just had a slight misspelling.

I'd love to see those! Will follow.
It must be a writerly thing; lots of the other writers I follow tweet interesting and lovely things like that, in addition to the advice and the griping.
