Re: Lord of the Rings series!?
Hello everyone, I was deeply sceptical of this series, however after watching the first two shows I was pleasantly surprised. One thing I cannot get if the elven haircuts, the sculptured locks imply in every elf town, next to the hall of fire there is a salon, where the mighty craftsman wield their ...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread
Watched the Joker last nigh, it seems to have all the ingredients to offend everybody - so kudos for that - if you can get past that it's quite a demanding watch - but worth it/

Hi V and other folks, I dont post much anywhere these days, but dip in now and then. I caught this film ayear after attending the show, and was again mesmerised bythe performance. I wanted to share it, and it was a no brainer to post it here, theboard which has the most smart erudite ans sympathetic...

Re: The Expanse
I watched season 4 - with the Amazon backing there is a change in tone, I enjoyed it but the quality of many of the actors is grating, not so much the main actors. although I have the bobby draper in the film is not the bobby in my imagination. the look is right but the character isn't and her story...

Re: Good music and other good stuff on youtube
hello here is a film of a quite astonishing performance that I was blessed to witness- The guy doing the introductions is well known in these parts as one of the UK top movie critics. To get back to a LOTR theme - this was the night I did my fanboy with John Rees-Davies who was also in the audience....

Re: Brexit Carried - PM Boris
I did at lot of work for the NI Fire Authority in the early 1990's I remember very well how bad it was, working with people who on a day to day basis were involved with the clearing up. I have been in plenty of dangerous cities including the no-go areas of Johannesburg, but nowhere frightened me as ...

regarding the Iliad - whose translation did you read, they are of variable quality, I would recommend Lattimores, and if you can get them have some of Malcolm Wilcock's commentaries to hand.

Re: Jeremy Corbyn wins UK Labour Leadership
Túrin has it about right, the anti-semitism claims against Jeremy Corbyn are part of an establishment plot to damage him. He has in the past been beaten up by right wing thugs when intervening to defend Jewish people, he said the thing that made him most proud of his parents was that his mother was ...

Re: Should you punch a Nazi? The limits of tolerance
At an ethical level I don't see much difference between the fascists or Nazi's the alt-right or indeed the supporter of neo-liberal economics, each of these movements is entirely comfortable with the notion of individuals within their cohorts being successful by exploiting and taking advantage of ot...

Since moving to the Island, I have started going to see live music again. I love it, we had Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark a few weeks ago, and tonight it's Gary Numan, first up was an LA band called Nightmare Air who were terrific, amps ups to 11 and every stomp box stomped, add to that a girl s...

Re: Lord of the Rings series!?
I like the idea of a return to middle earth, and I think a TV series with decent production values is a good vehicle, but I have major concerns about the capability of TV writers to adapt Tolkien without making either a very lame copy copy, or some oh so smart "clever" adaption. The other ...

Re: Stranger Things
Just finished watching the series generally one episode a day although we watched one and two in a session and after watching Ep8, we just had to watch the last episode immediately afterwards. Obviously no spoilers, but there was at least one moment where I wanted to cheer, but then I can be a soppy...
