This whole subject is pretty close to my heart. As has been said there are a number of factors to consider 1. That becuase of low wages in some cases both parents have to work. 2. Mothers should not be denied their aspirations to have careers 3. Families where one parents work should have the same t...

Anthriel As far as I understand it is in Germany that they have the most significant problems - and I think you analysis as to why it is happening is correct - women in Germany are marrying and having children later. Now where I would differ from you in the notion that this is a function of women be...

The whole issue to me is pretty simple - as long as you have a world order which is predicated on greed there will be those who use use to much and those who do not have enough. If you accept that we have finite resources then you have to accept either the notion of fair shares or the notion of eacg...

There is very little that would not improve Birmingham, I must admit the notion of a Treebeard sculpture being amongst living tree's is rather sweet

erm....what's wrong with St. Ignatius of Loyola? While I don't pretend to be a huge fan (with narya , I'm more on the Franciscan end of the spectrum), this is the core of my argument folk select the bits that suit them. I believe my brother in law was profoundly pychologically damaged by Jesuits. A...

The battle of Bywater is interesting because of it's smallness - the ruffians were nothing more than common thugs, who culd be driven off pretty easily which is what they were. I think that this fits into the notion of the contrast with the great and epic and the small - which is what the shire is. ...

I would have liked to respond in more detail to the various posts, however a combination of being off-line due to moving, sickness poor internet connections in South Africa, I have only really been able to get on line. I read a comment that it was speculation that Christianity survived because Const...

funnily enough I was thinking of these few lines of verse before I realised that this thread existed spooky eh GLORY be to God for dappled things— For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow; For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim; Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings; Landscape...

You miss the point - it was not originally a Christian place of worship - it was dedicated to all the gods - if they had simply said it is a place of worship then fine - but to claim it as there own is simply justifiying their missaproriation Ok, I see what you mean. So, would you feel the same out...

Rome is so lovely! :) I was irritated by the pompous notice saying that this was a Christian place of worship and should be respected as such, If you think asking some respect in a place of worship is asking too much, I'm afraid I think you need some attitude adjustment. You miss the point - it was...

to add a little to the debate - the Emperor Julian in the 3rd century criticised christianity because it wasn't able to co-exist with other faiths, moreover it's intolerance to schism marked it out as different. He also criticised the Christians because as he saw it that virtue was not honoured, on ...

Interesting dichotomy of views We pride ourselves in Europe of allowing freedom of speech, but then you get this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4734648.stm Personally I think Irving should be kept in prison, on the grounds that his consisitently commits fraud by describing himself as a hist...
