Re: Brexit Carried - Cameron Resigns

There are those who would agree with that point of view, against voting. They believe the masses simply aren't qualified to make any decisions, that it should be left up to elected enlightened leadership. They are pointing to the Brexit vote as an example that people should lead political decisions...

Re: Brexit Carried - Cameron Resigns

I also think that Switzerland and Norway, two of Europe’s most successful countries, show that you can be integrated into Europe without being a member of the EU. A divorce is not the same as not being married in the first place ;) So far we have no PM, nobody who wants to be PM, no opposition, no ...

Re: BotFA Box Office

Not bad, I have to say I'm really glad The Hobbit as a whole did so well in the BO. Partly because I don't think we would have gotten the EEs if it was a financial failure and always find those better than the cinema versions.

Re: TH:BotFA on BR/DVD

I just thought both Smaug and the ring are manifestations of the same evil, the dragon had died but the ring lives on at the end of the Hobbit, and definitely the greed in human/elvish/dwarven hearts does and it's an eternal struggle. Making a kind of ouroboros out of it as a symbol of continuity ma...

Re: TH:BotFA on BR/DVD

Was that Ouroboros on the DVD cover intentional or a happy accident (cool ring + dragon design). I find it so fitting here.

Re: The Hobbit vs Lord of the Rings. Which is more Purist?

I wonder if we all love movie LOTR more than we live movie TH because LOTR gave us a beautiful middle-earth and the book - for the first time. We loved it, we hated it, but we lapped it up greedily. The movies, the fandom and oh the message boards!! The beauty of seeing rivendell on the screen, the...

Re: The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies fan reviews... SP

Here's mine :D Most memorable The acorn scene - made even more beautiful by the final goodbye between Thorin and Bilbo Most moving Bilbo in the empty Bag End, the last 10 minutes of BOFA in general Most missed (something from the book that you hoped to see and didn't) ''so snow comes after fire and ...

Re: The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies fan reviews... SP

The acorn scene is the best example, but there is also the scene in the DoS EE when Bilbo defends Thorin, as well as his lovely defense of the dwarves (which is mainly referring to Thorin) in the scene where he gives the Arkenstone to Bard and Thranduil (a really great scene), and the scene where T...

Re: The Hobbit: TBotFA EE Anticipation thread

Not to mention this from Boyens, in reference to Alfrid: Isn't he brilliant? I loved writing him. He was my favorite. *sigh* I have to say I loved Alfrid in DOS, he's a fun character but my main beef with him in BOFA was that he took away screen time from the main characters. I suspect if the movie...

Re: BotFA Box Office

International results are not that good, seems like the general consensus is that it will really struggle to outperform DOS unless it's huge in China. Currently at $405,100,000 outside US.

Re: The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies fan reviews... SP

My problem with it in BOFA is the awful dialogue. Incredibly uninspired, especially compared to the nice stuff we got in DOS. I mean "You make me feel alive," and "Why does it hurt so much?" To quote Dain Ironfoor: "Aw, come on!" There was nothing nearly as bad as &quo...

Re: The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies fan reviews... SP

I liked that it really doesn't matter if the battle was lost or won... If I'm not expected to care about the outcome of this battle then why am I being shown this battle at all?? Did we see that much of the battle itself though? It was treated mostly as a setting or visual representation of what th...

Re: The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies fan reviews... SP

Helms Deep and Pelennor are rousing good vs evil battles and you know who to root for. In this one the motivations of the 'good' characters are not that much above Orcs IMHO and in the end people end up getting killed and losing their loved ones because of a pile of gold. I've read people complain t...

Re: The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies fan reviews... SP

The only things that I liked about Legolas being there was that he threw Thorin's sword back and saved him thus repaying Thorin for accidentally saving his life during the barrel scene in DOS. Nice to meet you LoremIspum! I never felt that this was accidental. I liked the fact that Thorin deliberat...

Re: The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies fan reviews... SP

Hello, long time lurker here! :) Just wanted to add my 2 cents and say that I very much agree as well with the thoughts above. Though I did love everything the movie got right - I think some scenes manage to outshine the best of LOTR in their maturity and sublimity. Freeman and Armitage were both me...
