Doesn't "Shadowlands" deal mainly with Lewis's marriage? If I recall correctly, Tolkien did not approve of the marriage, which began as a legal fiction, a means of letting Lewis's American wife remain in England longer, and only later became a true marriage. (I also seem to remember that ...

Why would anyone make a movie about C.S. Lewis and not include Tolkien as a character? That baffles me immeasurably. But perhaps the literature that I have read that indicates that Tolkien had such a large influence on Lewis were exxagerated?

Ho boy! This needs a week's answer, or none. Look for me in a week. :P

(And I do have a pretty negative view of lawyers, btw.)

Yov, I hardly know how to respond to what you are saying, other then to say that no, I don't believe that it is "the anti-Christian" lawyers that are to blame. That's not what I was saying at all... You know what? I went back and read what you wrote and saw that I completely misread it. M...

Yov, I hardly know how to respond to what you are saying, other then to say that no, I don't believe that it is "the anti-Christian" lawyers that are to blame. The cases that I have been involved in certainly did involve situations where people were discriminated because they were Christia...

Amazing picture, Frelga. I wish I could take pictures like that!

But at least I google well. :P (I'm not 100% that that last picture of mine was really a photo, but it is so beautiful that it hardly matters.)

Well said, oh * sparkly * one. I agree with what you say about both his parents and his eldest sons. (I'm sure I'll have more to say about this at some point, but I'm not feeling particularly loquacious right now).

To me (and this is of course just me) opposing discrimination based on any religion is opposing discrimination based on all religions. I don't see why opposing discrimination against Christians would lead to the conclusion that you are in favor of discrimination against Jews, or Hopis, or athiests, ...

ETA: I keep thinking about this and I think what bothers me about the whole thing--not just the situation with Anthy but the whole issue of the thread--is that it keeps concentrating on the specific religion. So you have people looking out for whether Christianity is protected or Judism is protecte...

Voronwë, thanks for all the quotes from LOTR - I had forgotten about all those - they do add an interesting further layer, but I'm also wondering whether Tolkien had the same concept of Fëanor throughout his stories? Well, Fëanor's basic story, including his most evil deeds such as the kin-slaying,...

Of The Sindar The Sindar do get a raw deal, don’t they, their quiet flames obscured by the bright ...

The Spirit of Fire (The Fëanor discussion)

One of Tolkien's most important - and puzzling - characters is Finwë’s oldest son, Curufinwë (“curu” meaning skill), better known by his mother’s name for him Fëanáro – “Spirit of Fire” – which in Sindarin is rendered as Fëanor. Tolkien himself indicated that Fëanor, along with Galadriel and Lúthien...

The Panther by Rainer Maria Rilke [Note: Hobby mentioned this poem in the picture thread, and I thought I would look it up. I found that there are many, many very different translations. The following translation is by Guntram Deichsel. Hobby, if there is an English translation that you particularly...
