Re: Games, Riddles, Puzzles, and other Distractions
The Mini was amusing. And Strands was very easy. Extremely hit-and-miss, that one.

Re: Games, Riddles, Puzzles, and other Distractions
I'm talking about Strands anyway, and the answer is that things have changed since my memory formed. But they also changed before that. There is no truth, everything is relative!

Re: Games, Riddles, Puzzles, and other Distractions
I don't know what it was--with a couple exceptions, it's certainly not how I remember things. Either they're doing some wordplay that went over my head, or things have changed since the last time I checked.

Re: Games, Riddles, Puzzles, and other Distractions
(Connections spoilers to follow) Rose; yeah, I was aware of the thing, just not the name. There were multiple false leads too. I spent way too many brain cycles (and mistakes) trying to construct a "blind" category from mole, faith, and mini (pencil blinds are a thing, right??...

Re: Games, Riddles, Puzzles, and other Distractions
I don't know if today's puzzles were especially hard, or if I'm just not all there, but I struggled with all of them. In all cases I got there eventually, but it took forever (in my defense, I'd never even heard of a <spoiler>). I'm gonna blame it on donating blood yesterday evening. poodle skirt

Re: Games, Riddles, Puzzles, and other Distractions
The ones that require pop culture knowledge are the ones I don't get, and I'm also terribly annoyed when a category is something that depends on the structure of the word rather than its semantics ("bird names minus the final letter"), but otherwise I love it.

Here's a problem someone at work ran into today with the AI assistant. . swapnibbles.png . (for the non-coders, you probably know that computer information is quantified as "bytes." Sometimes in code you have to deal with half a byte, and some smart*** back in the day decided to call that ...

Re: Games, Riddles, Puzzles, and other Distractions
I'm started playing these little NYT games, and Wordle and Strands are fun and all, but Connections is so far ahead in the best game competition that it's not even close. I could play that game for hours on end (and have; there are archives).

This was the first Strands I've seen where one of the word paths crossed itself (made an X). I didn't realize that was allowed, and I'm not sure I approve...

Re: The (no longer) much too early 2024 election thread
George Carlin spelled this whole dynamic out years ago (NSFW; the bit includes at least 2 of his words that you can't say on TV, but evidently can on YouTube). The difference is that, unless you were an unwilling target of his womanizing, Clinton's bullshitting was largely beneficent, while Trump i...

Re: The Russia Investigations and other Trump-related cases
Belittling Trump for being trapped beneath crushing debt is not the way to win voters over. Pointing out all the things the Biden administration has done to assist debtors and publicly directing him toward programs that could help would have been far more effective.

Re: AI! AI! A ChatGPT is come!
IMO, ChatGPT should not be used for fact-finding at all. It is not a search engine, and it does not have the power to look things up on the internet. As a first approximation, it relies on its "memory" to answer questions, and its memory is subject to all the same problems a person's is--t...

Re: Trump and others charged with conspiring to overturn 2020 election in Georgia
One tried to overthrow the US government, one failed to fill out the HR forms for an office romance. Guess who gets punished? What a crock; Trump doesn't deserve to win, but his pusillanimous "opponents" certainly deserve to lose. This is a critical moment in history--Putin and Trump are w...

If they're truly concerned about Chinese companies having too much influence over Americans' lives, maybe they should start with manufacturing instead of social media.

Every time I see a headline along the lines of "Biden administration responds to latest Russian atrocity by imposing additional sanctions on...", all I can think is why the h3|! weren't you doing that already.

Not the free version (DALL-E can do that sort of thing), but it can invent and describe them.
