Re: The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
I haven't been to the movies in years. I'll wait and see how the LOTRwebiverse feels about it, then if the Group Consensus is largely positive, buy the DVD release.

Re: Completing my Tolkien Library
I haven't forgotten the shelfie (not that anyone has been holding their breath ;-). ) It's just that on the one hand I forgot, and on the other I snagged a few more gift cards from someone and ordered a few more books. A hardcover edition of the Hobbit, as well as “The Annotated Hobbit“ and 'Tolkien...

Re: Completing my Tolkien Library
Incidentally, I'm about halfway through “The Book of Lost Tales, Part 1.“ I'm really loving it. Although not as 'polished,' per se than the finished Silmarillion, I do like the approach he originally took in having the story told through the adventure of Eriol. I want to be Eriol; Tol Erresea sounds...

Re: News from Bree and other random discussions
At least not yet. When does The Lord of the Rings enter the public domain? (And when would it have done so based on the laws that were in effect in Tolkien's lifetime?) I was curious about this, so I did a search. The answer is complicated and depends upon the country, but it varies widely. This si...

Re: Completing my Tolkien Library
I will! Probably not tonight. I did need a new bookshelf. My creative stocking of books here and there wasn't working anymore.

Re: Completing my Tolkien Library
Just a belated update. My sister-in-law needed me to come back a week later after the previously mentioned tree-cutting and cut down some more of the Cousin It tree as well as the obvious clean up. Soooooo, another generous payoff. And with that, another huge Tolkien order. This time, the coffee-tab...

Re: Completing my Tolkien Library
Twenty of the books arrived yesterday! The ones from Amazon; the two from the Book Depository ('Lay of Beleriand' and 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight') are expected sometime this week or next. They were shipped last Wednesday the 14th. I'm a happy little Hobbit, though I do need to be visiting thri...

Re: What do we Know About the Postal System of the Shire
I do not think that Sam was ever the postmaster; he was the Mayor of Michel Delving after the War of the Ring. The Office of Postmaster was a part of the Mayoralty, but as for the day-to-day operations, someone else probably ran that service.

Re: Completing my Tolkien Library
Yes, but at the moment I can't really justify spending much more money. This was a windfall and couldn't really be spent anywhere else; i.e. if she paid me cash/cheque for the tree job, then that would probably have been deposited and put towards 'normal' spending, or just saved. We don't buy anythi...

Re: Completing my Tolkien Library
I think only a few of the pictures in that book will be in the upcoming illustrated LOTR. You can see from the following list of the Contents that only 10 or 11 or the 48 pictures are from LOTR. http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Pictures_by_J.R.R._Tolkien You're probably right. Hopefully the success o...

Re: Completing my Tolkien Library
I couldn't find anything called exactly "Pictures by Tokien", . I went back to Amazon and looked up what I saw there. This one: https://www.amazon.com/Pictures-J-R-R-Tolkien-Christopher/dp/0395606489 Very expensive. Perhaps a lot of these pictures will be in the upcoming illustrated LOTR ...

Completing my Tolkien Library
OK, so last week I began the cutting down of a tree in my sister-in-law's backyard. It's one of those 'Cousin It' trees. I forget the real name, but they go up a dozen feet and then cascade down in very slender branches, all densely grouped together, much like Cousin It of the Addams Family. This on...

Re: What are you reading?
Tolkien has been the only fantasy author I've ever read (I grew up reading 'hard sci-fi,' i.e. Isaac Asimov, AC Clarke, Larry Niven, etc.) However, after starting to read Tolkien only a decade ago (Huh? What?!) I decided to look at who else I might enjoy. For personal reasons I wanted to choose Cath...

Re: GREETINGS to our Newest Members!
“Leaf by Niggle” is one of my fav stories! It's the first non-Legendarium story of Tolkien that I've read. I am so glad that I got a copy of “Tales...“ as I now appreciate Tolkien much more. It's one thing to say that you love his works if all you've read is from the Legendarium; but to read someth...

Re: Who is Your Favorite Hobbit?
Samwise Gamgee. He's a gardener (I also garden) and loyalty is one of his chief virtues. I am loyal to a fault to people who are dear to me and get hurt when it's not returned (that's life). His wife's name is Rose (or Rosie) as is my wife's name. My username is the Elvish form of “Samwise.“ I was o...
