That year the mound was raised 6 incehes making it very difficult for the hitter. Technically, the mound wasn't raised in 1968, it was lowered in 1969. Prior to the 1969 season the height of the mound had been 15 inches. However, after the so-called "Year of the Pitcher", the Baseball Rul...

I would take Tom Seaver, Bob Gibson, and Sandy Koufax over Clemens any day of the week. People forget that Seaver won his 300+ games with mostly bad or mediocre teams. A truly great pitcher and a real sportsman as well (which you simply can't say about Clemens). Seaver was a great pitcher. Like Cle...

I totally agree with what you're saying and, no, it's not a stretch at all to say that Clemens is the best of his era. :)

It's very difficult to objectively state that any one person is the greatest anything, whether it be pianist, game show host, or U.S. President. I said that Clemens is one of the greatest, and I stand by that. Do you want to know who really impresses me yet is seldomly mentioned in this age of super...

Rocket was fantastic today! Did you hear the announcers were touting him as perhaps the best pitcher ever?!! I'd definitely agree that Roger Clemens is one of the greatest pitchers of all time, but it's difficult to place him at #1. I've seen him pitch many times on TV, and one time in person. I sa...

The image you've provided of Lake Geneva is evidence that you do have I, er, eye. ;)

Thank you for sharing. :)

Care to make a friendly wager? Loser takes winner to lunch. In winner's home city? Which means either you drive to L.A. (likely) or I drive up to Santa Cruz (less likely). And if neither team wins you both come up to Sacramento and treat Old Tom to the Bombadil Blueplate special--yellow c...

It's a baseball maxim that any team can beat any other team on any given day. Unless that team is the Cubs and that day is the deciding game of the NLCS. :D (Sorry to add to your pain, Cubs fans. Just think, 3 more years and it'll be 100 years since the Cubs last won the World Series. Whoops! I did...

Hey, Alatar! I just wanted to say how much I respect and admire folks such as yourself who give their time, talent, and energy doing something that they really love. I recall some time back discussing over on TORC your performing Guys & Dolls . It's wonderful to see that you're still enjoying pe...

Re: The Scouring of the Shire

I don't believe I participated in that discussion on TORC, but I can make up for lost time now. ;) Seeing Sam slot back into being scolded, ninnyhammer-wise, by the Gaffer, is jarring to me after his great deeds. Tolkien seems to be on the brink of bringing back the Simple Sam of the early chapters,...

I'm with John Cleese on this one. If I recall correctly, he was asked the difference between the British and Americans. He said there were three basic differences. 1. We speak English 2. When you meet our head of state you only have to kiss here hand 3. When we have a World Series we invite other c...

It was lovely to read your account of your travel in Germany and Austria, Tom! Next time you come over here, don't forget to make a stop in Cologne! :D I'd really enjoy that. (I'm not going to rejoin the Air Force with the hopes of going TDY there, though. ;) ) Other than the famous gothic cathedra...

There can never be enough Bombadil! Indeed, and no Tolkien-related message board is complete until the subject of Tom Bombadil has been discussed. (Now where's that Balrog with/without wings thread? ;) ) But seriously… There are some who believe that Tolkien is playing a game with us, that all the ...

Quiz time: Does anybody know what kind of bird Tom's blue feather belonged to?

(The blue feather in the hat of the photo of me I linked to is a duck's feather dyed blue, by the way. Tom's feather wasn't from a duck, but it was the best I could do.)

I think I'm a bit late coming to this thread, but for whatever it's worth here's my 2 cents... Yes, in Mozart's time all the keys were attributed a particular expression. I remember that F-major is rural and C-major of course triumphant. One of the minor ones is for death - not sure if it's g or d m...

As part of your orientation: the llama is the hieroglyph for the Hall of Fire. :llama: No explanation for this can be offered. Just use it whenever you can't think of anything else to say. When I can't think of anything else to say? That's a very rare thing indeed! I do, however, a...

Yes, I sang with the chorus for a couple of years. That was back in the early '90s. The first opera I did with the Sacramento Opera was Johan Strauss' "The Gypsy Baron", which is actually an operetta. Like "Magic Flute", it is a singspiel . We sang in German but all the spoken di...

Little Bird sat on a twig. 'Whillo, Tom! I heed you. I've a guess, I've a guess where your fancies lead you. Shall I go, shall I go, bring him word to meet you?' How did you find us, Tom? A little bird told me. ;) Seriously, Anthriel provided the website URL to me in an email as a result of our dis...

I found that smiley during a web search for images of Tom Bombadil some time back. There's also one for Goldberry: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v702/OldTomBombadil/goldberry.gif That picture of my wife and me was taken at a picnic in San Francisco on Oct 1, 2005. I'm a HUGE fan of Mozart and Die Zauberflöte in particular. I own a CD recording of the Berlin Philarmonic directed by Karl Böhm featuring Fritz Wunderlich as Tamino, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau as Papageno, and Roberta Peters as the Queen of the Night. The only thing I don't like about this recording ...
